Sunday Sunday
« on: September 19, 2010, 10:51:58 AM »
So I have just got back from having an hours paly on the chutes at the Old Mill practising the stuff Pete showed me at Nene. As I got out of my boat a big chap standing on the pavement asked if I had permission to paddle there from the land owners, so I asked who the land owners were. According to him they are the Cathedral and Salisbury District Council, he was obviously not happy when I told him in my happy go lucky way that SDC don't exist and that as far as I knew the club had an arrangement for Tuesdays evenings and Sunday Mornings 10-12.
Anyway he preceded to tell me that I shouldn't be there and the river is used for fishing competitions, even less happy when I told him I had checked the competition dates and there where none scheduled in that area till October. So he then started to tell me that he is a baliff and would be very unhappy if I had disturbed any fellow fishermen on my way round, I pointed to my van and told him I had got on the water here and only played on the chutes. Now his parting arguement was that I had been disturbing the river bed and in turn spawning areas ??? in return he got told that I only touched the gravel on entry to the river where hundreds on dogs have done far more disturbing than me. As he left I said to him that its a shame we can't all get along and enjoy the river at this point he walked off and said he will be reporting me :-*   ;) ;D

I remember we bumped into somebody of a similar discription a couple of years ago one Tuesday evening a couple hundred or so yards downstream of the mill. He said pretty much the same stuff, and when we told him that we had an access agreement, he said that he would contact the Club to complain. I don't think he ever did, and if he did, I am sure that Ian would be supportive.

Matt, on a previous trip(Avon) I reported the incident to the Amesbury police (my local) The result was at best inconclusive, although if we continue to report hassle, it will build up a history of these events. Your arguments & your reasonable manner demonstate the kayakers willingness to share. Have you considered reporting it?
Anyone fancy an Avon trip in the near future (we may try and avoid a fishing contest this time, I'm ready for a re-match)

No I didn't think reporting to the Police was necessary, the guy wasn't abusive or violent just trying to assert a misplaced position of authority. He made himself look stupid enough in front of the people enjoying a coffee outside the pub. ;D

Matt

It might be worth dropping a note to Andreas at Salisbury and District Angling club. They have a web site and you may be able to contact him direct by e mail. Can't remember his surname off the top of my head but he is greek and his surname should stand out!! Chris and I had a long chat with him at his office a couple of months ago and he was very keen for us all to get on. We also gave him our assurances that we would try and avoid all competitions. He was going to pass on to his members that we should all use the river togeather and that we would avoid comps. He may be able to give re assurance that this was not one of his bailiffs and maybe push something out again to their members on their forum.
He wants what we want. For everyone to enjoy the river, and by talking we may avoid any major issues in the future!!
