It seems like only yesterday.

No it isn't the same cag :P

It was taken at Middleton-in-Teesdale when I used to do slalom in 1981 (Div 3).

The boat was a state of the art, kevlar hull (very new then) Pyranha Premier. Wooden Prijon paddles.

We did not wear a traditional BA then - instead we used "big boy" spray decks where all of the bouyancy fitted between your legs inside the boat under the spraydeck. They were banned not long afterwards. My hair was a bit longer then.

Ahh - the memories...

That paddle looks massive! Must have been twice the length as your current one.

How come both Gordon's and Nigel's pics are from 1981?
Nigel did you not get your boat carved out of a tree trunk by an Indian. That was very advanced in 1981!

At least Gordon proves that we had colour film in those days!

I did also have a kayak which was little more than a tree trunk - a fibreglass hulk which gave me fibreglass splinters in the backside.

Keeping the 1981 theme, here is a picture of me using the hulk over Richmond Falls at the end of the Army Whitewater Championships 1981 - and to prove it, my official Certificate of Insanity!

...and to continue the retro image, here is the Richmond School (Yorkshire) team photo from 1982 when we won the School Slalom Championships.

I can assure you that long hair was fashionable (although I really did not care!)

Richmod falls, I remember the line, zig zag a bit at the top, shoot right of centre, my certificate was 1977 first time, I think the papyrus has crumbled by now.
