My Good News
« on: December 02, 2009, 09:25:44 PM »
As many of you may know, I spent a number of years working in Devon managing military training areas in Devon and Cornwall before I was posted to Salisbury Plain.

Although I enjoy Salisbury Plain, my hart has been in Devon and Cornwall since I left. I love the place.

My good news is that I have just been promoted to be the Senior Estate Advisor for the MOD Training Areas covering Devon and Cornwall, starting in January 2010.

I will be responsible for the land management of Army training areas including Penhale *(next to Perrenporth), Tregantle and Staddon Heights* near Plymouth, Fremington*, Braunton Burrows*, Bodmin Moor, Dartmoor, Exmoor and Wyke Regis* near Weymouth. The sites with an * are coastal training areas so potential for plenty of sea kayaking on the North and South coasts of Cornwall and Devon.

You may never have heard of Dartmoor or Exmoor! I think that they may have some rivers.

I will be based at Exeter so I expect that I will be moving house back down there during 2010. I will initially be travelling down weekly returning to Wiltshire at weekends.

Once I have found a house and moved, guests will be welcome! My criteria for houses will be space to park Land Rovers, motorbikes, and store kayaks.

Well done on the promotion. This means you'll be missing out on our avon black runs in the future, but you'll be getting in lot of paddling on dartmoor/exmoor so there's an up side! I'm sure you'll get plenty of paddling visitors there! ;)

Thanks for the good wishes.

Initially, I will remain living in Wiltshire and on past experience, it can take nearly a year to find a house and move. In the meantime, I will get a flat so there will be a base at both ends of the A303. Although I will be starting down there on 18 January, I will not be disappearing straight away.

I'm a member of 2 clubs for less than that! You dont need a club anyway. There are plenty of paddling groups you can use. UKRGB is one and there is another that some promotes on there but i cant find it now.

I will join them anyway - even at £50 it is less than a pound a week.

I have exchanged contracts and will be moving to Okehampton on the 13 July. I will not be doing any paddling before that as I need to pack etc.

Once settled, I will welcome guests who guide me down the Dartmoor rivers. I will keep in touch.
