north east trip in the autumn?
« on: May 08, 2010, 08:41:22 PM »
I have spent the last few days visiting my parents in  Swaledale, and although did not have a boat with me, spent a day wandering around the local white water grade 2/3/4 highlights on foot. The water levels were very low and I even climbed up a section of Richmond Fallls which I can only remember it being possible in the 1976 drought.

I had a wander up the Swale, and visited Low Force and Egglestone Rapids on the Tees. I really fancy a trip down these rivers at some stage. Does anyone fancy a go in the Autumn. As I was bought up in the area and still know a number of farmers in Swaledale, I could arrange cheap camping albeit fairly basic stuff without shower blocks etc.  A long weekend maybe...

Any interest?

You mentioned it being dry up there, do we not need volume of rain to fill the rivers back up? ... Camping in the rain is not the best of ideas. And whats the drop off like? Is it something we can arrange in advance, or do we need to just decide one thursday evening that we're off the next day?

I Certainly could do with experience in a different area.

The Tyne Tour is on 5/6/7 November 2010. It is the weekend after the Teifi tour.

Once there is some steady rain then there would be plenty of water to make the Tees paddleable. The same with the Swale. If there has been a massive amount of rain, both rivers become (in my view) unpaddleable.

Nigel,

Yes up for any trips as long as they don't clash with anything else and they are not too advanced!

Cheers
