Devizes to Westminster

Anyone up for this event next year?  We would have to start training now and I think you have to complete a certain number of qualifying events.  I was thinking of doing it over the four days.

Sounds interesting to me. What sort of boat are you thinking of.

I went along to the Start last year. Almost everyone does it in a racing boat.

There were a few who used other boats. Nobody was daft enough to use a white water boat. There were a (small) few who used sea kayaks. Given the type of paddling, I would recommend sea kayaks as a minimum.

Because it is my nearest stretch of water, I often went paddling on the Kennet and Avon canal - I must say that I have got bored with it and am in no hurry to do the Devizes Westminster paddle.

I've tried this(82/83) I think, its not too bad in a single(4 days), the last day is tidal & relatively short, it would be sensible to source & learn to paddle a LD(long distance/Marathon) boat. Catch up with me on a Tues for more details, however a long summer/autumn sea paddling is excellent, enjoyable, and relevant training.

I don't want to appear negative, but the DW race is a long way from what Salisbury Canoe Club is targeted for.

That said, why not?

The DW Race is a canoe / kayak marathon. Competing in the type of boats we paddle would be like taking a banger racing car to compete in formula one grand prix!

If you are seriously interested in this type of race, I would recommend that you join Devizes Canoe Club - I paddled with them on their first few meetings last year in a sea kayak (the only person not in a K1 / K2 racer) and fished out the beginners. See http://www.devizescanoeclub.co.uk/
